Window tinting and getting pulled over

I want to get my windows tinted but of course don't want to do it unless I don't my front passenger and driver side and of course it's illegal in Michigan. For the people who have it done where it's illegal do you ever actually get pulled over because of it? Should I really need to worry too much about it?
| iofdetiger | 03-29-2005 01:39 PM |
ive had 35% done on all my wrx's windows for about a year and a half now, ive been pulled over plenty of times, but never for the tint, and theyve never mentioned it.
| mcowger | 03-29-2005 02:21 PM |
Depends on where you are. People get dinged for it all the time in CA
| aem421 | 03-29-2005 03:22 PM |
^^...I agree. Depends on the state you live in. I have 20% and have never been bothered. Then again, when I got pulled over, I just rolled down both front windows. Check your state's tinting laws if you're really worried about it. Better safe than sorry.
| KAX | 03-29-2005 03:30 PM |
usually tinting tickets are only assessed after being pulled over. They shouldnt be able to pull you over just for your tint, but might give you a ticket for it after being pulled over for, say, speeding. But then it all depends on your state, and the kind of cop who pulls you over.

I have 20% and I have never been bothered by it at all either(knock on wood)
so it all depends on where you live and how picky the local police are.

I've been wondering the same thing.
And as the original poster said it's illegal to have anything on the front three windows except the top 4"... he/she was just wondering if anyone who didn't obey this law actually gets pulled over.
I've talked to two others (not with subarus, but one pretty riced out) and both got pulled over and ticketed for the windows, but they were seemingly like limo tint.
I think you could get away with a light tint and not be ticketed... at least that's what i'm going to bank on.

Pretty much like anything else. If you don't go crazy (super dark) most cops won't bother you. But I notice your from G.R. Stay out of Greenville. Cops will nail you in a heartbeat. Seems to be their thing. Worst part is the 2 points on your ticket. If you do get a ticket, try to talk the officer into signing it off if you remove the tint. They aren't supposed to, but some will. Need to have the same officer sign it though.

I have about 25% on my WRX and have never been pulled over because of it. But twice when I was pulled over they checked my tint level.
ive got really dry/sensitive eyes and my eye doctor wrote a letter saying I need window tinting on my car. it's worked both times

Has anyone ever tried that static cling window film (don't laugh)? Seems like if you did a careful job of installing it, that could potentially look just fine, and if you get pulled over, the law states that anything "removable" is legal (in CA anyway) so it'd save you a lot of work compared to stripping and re-tinting regular stuff. Just show the officer that it peels off, drive away, profit.
Assuming the stuff doesn't look like complete ass of course.

It is now i believe illegal in ny to have anything on your front windows.. so they told me when I got mine done.. and my car is black..and I only have 35% on the front, but with the color of the car I think it looks darker.. and I have been pulled over over 13 times.. and sometimes if they want to be a dick.. they'll mention the tint but dont really bother with a ticket..

Actually that is what happened to me. He never gave me the option to just pay and leave it on (actually kinda glad he didnt cuz i like it better without tint). He made me remove it and sign it off, and it didnt have to be the same officer, just went to the precinct and paid a $10 inspection fee and got it signed off. that might be just here in FL, cuz that seams to be the norm for everything (kept telling me to remove my exhaust and made me sign for it, but i jst put i a silencer and get it signed off and take the silencer back out).
but in any event, like said above, it all depends on the cop and what you did initially to get pulled over.

I just got my windows tinted today. 15% on rears and 20% on front driver and passenger windows. They came out looking darker then i thought. i have a black car so i wanted there to be a subtle difference between the back and front so hopefully it would trick the cop  Anyways, im scared as hell imma get ticketed for my tint.... i cant roll down my windows right now (cuz your not supposed to) and i was driving. I stop at a stop light and a cop pulls up next to me  i was scared as hell, but he didnt take notice cuz it was getting dark anyways

just got pulled over last week in texas (DFW) (actually right in front of my house) and the only reason he pulled me over is because of my tint. it is illegal and i know it (20% all around which in texas you are allow 25% in the front windows), but he bought out the sensor and measured 12%.
so he wrote me a ticket, and told me if he sees me again next week with the same tint, will give me ticket again. so i have no choice but to re-tint my front windows with 35%

if it measured 12% when you know its 20, than his meter is wrong, or he needs to get his eyes examined. If you have any proff its not 12% then take it to court, and they will throw it out. Theyd probably thow it out anyway.

I thought getting a ticket for tinting was a 'fix it' ticket, not one where you'd get points. I thought the only way the points would come in to effect were if you got a speeding ticket or something along with your tint.
I can't decide myself... i don't want there to be a different in the front/back even if it's subtle. Anyone have pics of tint with the actual percentage that they can post with the pic?
I've seen a lot of pictures of cars with tint, but they rarely, if ever, say what % they have and I want to see it on a car to make a decision.

Michigan has gone back and forth on this for several years. They actually write under "vision obstruction" statute. Never heard of any police in Michigan that actually have a meter. I've got 35% on by rears and back window. When it gets out of the shop I'll try to post a pic for you. Also get the installer to give you a receipt showing the tint %. Get stopped show it to the officer. Get a ticket, take the receipt to court. Once again, no meter, subjective, he who has the best documentation usually wins!

i am debating that, but i am pretty sure if i go to court the DA will probably says "well, it is not 12%, but it is still 20% which is still illegal"

never had any problems with my 35% tint, sometimes i wish it were darker, but I hear the stories of people getting pulled over just for tint and i'm ok with it, no reason to give cops another reason to pull you over, plus if they pull you over for just tint they're gonna be looking for other stuff too, which isnt something i need to deal with.

Thanks :) I would appreciate the picture as well... a person that posted a bit after yours said they didn't have much trouble with their 35% so it'd be nice to see on the car. I obviously don't want something where it blacks everything out... i just want a subtle tint to keep the black going from the car all the way to the roof.

just don't get it tinted so dark that you can't see someone sitting in the car and see where their hands are.

In CA if the cops can't see you digging in your nose then your tints too dark. Hate CA laws.

I got pulled over in IL just for tint, and my front doors were pretty light. $75 mail in ticket...I took the tint off anyway. My brother had the same thing happen, also very lightly tinted fronts. It's a PITA I hate bright sun shining on me, let alone blinding my toddler in the backseat (the wrx seems especially bad about that for some reason).
I'd like to make some kind of snap on tint piece that is custom fit for the wrx and just pulls off. It'd be a pain in drivethru's, and probably tough with frameless windows, so I haven't bothered.

Nah.
The OEM glass is 5% or so (or, 95%, depending on which end you want to go from.
20-5= 15. Getting in the ball park.
Does driver smoke in his car? How clean were his windows, inside AND outside? Two surfaces involved; enough to drop transmission by 1-2%?
How clean was lens on the tint meter emitter? On the tint meter receiver?
Any dust built up, INSIDE either of the devices? Four surfaces involved; enough to drop transmission by another 1-2%?
You're right there at 12%, without too much consideration.
But hey, who said it was that simple....
Batteries fresh, on both devices?
When was the unit last calibrated?
Has it been dropped since it was calibrated, stored in any conditions (eg heat over 110* etc) that the manufacturer specifies as mandating re-calibration?
Was the operator trained and/or certified in use of the device?
You can go to court on it, but read between the lines above, first ;-)

i have 5% (limo) on all windows. i got pulled over once for tint in the pouring rain at 1230 am. i take a prescription drug which makes my skin photosensitive, i have a note in my glovebox from an MD stating this.. he had nothing of that note.. he refused to even look at it. i took it to court and the judge dismissed me in about 10 seconds saying i just need to keep it in my glove box because ill be getting more tickets.. i bet that cop just had to meet his quota for the month...

or he had too much pride in himself he didnt want to let you off. im betting on that.
for whoever got a ticket for 12%, if you can prove the cop is wrong, they should dismiss it, whether your tint is still illegal or not. But its up to you, whether you want to spend the time.

if iz not too dark, your should be fine. I have 35% all around for about a year and havent been bothered by cops yet. but if you get pulled over for having other mods that are illegal, the cop will probably jot down ur tint as well.

like I said before I have a letter from my eye doctor and the second time I used it when I pulled over I could tell the cop was pissed. He really wanted to give me that tint ticket..
technically he could have still given me a ticket to be an ass but theres no doubt it would be have been dropped in court

I've got 35% all the way around 'cept for my rear, which is 18% for almost 2yrs now (legal in my state). Have been pulled over 4x w/it - got a tint and no front plate ticket 1x (and the cop was defin' looking to give me a ticket that time) - and warnings the other 3. I honestly see the wing as more of an attention getter than tint (unless you have that hideous mirror crap happening).
| spankaveli | 04-02-2005 08:57 PM |
i got pulled over about 2 weeks after my 5% was put on :o
| Ineed2speed | 04-03-2005 03:46 AM |
Yea 35% seems to be the best way to go all around. If you're really paranoid, drive with your windows down most of the time. ;) Just dont try to give them more reasons to pull you over. Out here in Irvine, cops are bigger dicks and usually give us more crap just for having tint or a "loud" exhaust.
