WRX factory body kit (front/rear lips) - install directions?
I'm trying to find someone who has installed the subaru factory WRX front/rear body kit pieces (lips) and has the install directions. If I could somehow get a copy (scan/fax) or simply ask a few questions it would really help me out.
I purchased a replica kit that seems to be of good quality (since I have the black car I would have had to paint the factory kit anyway), but I'm lacking directions (and the rear lip install is not obvious to me).
Thanks in advance.

Primitive Motorsports
Got them from Primitive Motorsports (Paul Eckland) - they are fiberglass and not urethane, but the quality is very good and for what the difference in price is vs the authentic parts (+ that I would have to strip and then paint them anyway) it was well worth it.
Now I just need some directions to try and make sure I do the install correctly. I wish someone would make some replica side-skirts as well, cause I really don't want to go through the hassle of sanding these down, etc to paint....

how much does it cost to get the fiberglass ones painted? I also want to get the ground effects kit but they are pricy. I can get the origionals, and since i have a blue wrx i think they can be shipped painted. the fiberglass ones are so much cheaper but the need to be painted and I've heard that they are more fragil. what should I do? Do u reccomend?

I bought this same kit too. The front and rear skirts are being painted along with my factory side skirts right now for 200 bucks by a very reputable paint shop here in Salisbury, MD. They will do my sti hood scoop when it comes for like another 20 bucks or something. I am installing the kit this saturday night and will be able to tell you how I did it on sunday morning/afternoon if you can wait that long.
Just by looking at it, we will have to drill holes in the front of the front bumper where the bolts protrude from the 2 outer pieces. Then to connect the black metal brackets, just go to the auto store near you and buy the plastic clips that push through the brackets and into the holes that are already underneath the car (this should be easy, buy at least 15 to 20 of these and make sure they match the factory holes and one of your drill bits). Then unclip the wheel well liner clips and slide the piece in place and re insert the clip (you may have to drill a hole in the kit piece, I dont have it in front of me so I dont know) the center piece may also be cliped underneath with the side pieces at one point, I dont know. I will be able to tell you for sure on sunday.
Then for the rear, you will have to drill holes in the 2 outer pieces of the kit where they attach to the inner rear wheel well. Then you remove the factory pins that are holding the plastic wheel well cover and just slide the kit pieces in place and push the pin back through the hole you drilled in the kit so it holds. Then you will probably have to drill holes in the rear center kit piece where it has tab-like pieces that hang off. If there are no factory holes just drill into the plastic under the car so it matches up with the tabs. I think the hardest part will be getting it all to line up, for drilling and fitment. I really wish I had some close ups of the factory kit to see how it really fits.

I would definately reccomend this kit. It does not hang lower than the stock bumpers, so unless you are slamming your car you shouldnt be worried about hitting anything. If you do hit something, I believe you should still be ok, these pieces are small and strong. Only an accident (rear ending someone/hitting a wall at 5mph+) should do harm to these pieces. If you do lower your car, no matter what kind of kit you have or even if you dont have a kit, you need to become used to not pulling as far forward into parking spaces so you dont hit the curb. Even if you slam it you wont have a problem with speed bumps. I had a 95 eclipse dropped 2.25" and a fiberglass kamikaze bumper that hung lower than stock. I broke it on a pothole in someones gravel driveway at night. But it wouldnt scrape on even the biggest speedbumps. It was 1/2 as thin as these primitive pieces and made like crap.
As far as painting, like I said above I am paying 200 bucks to get my factory side skirts painted along with the front and rear skirts. All together, my kit has cost 500 bucks painted. With the Sti hood scoop it will be 670, still less than the subaru oem front and rear kit together. Fitment may suck but I wont know that till saturday night.

A writeup would be great!
Yes - I can wait - I haven't found someone to paint my kit yet, so I won't be doing the install for a few weeks at least. If you can do a writeup with tips/etc from your install it would be great!
Also, did you figure out where the rubber gasket goes with the front lip pieces?
Thanks

yeah, thanks for the info. please do a write up, I'm looking forward to it. I plan to lower the car approx. 1.5 in. This kit looks to be a good idea. (it looks just like the factory kit right?) Or maybe just getting the oem front kit and then get the primitive rear and then the side skirts painted. I'm not worried about the back rubbing or scraping against something but the front maybe... especially if for some reason some else is driving the car and arent used to a low car and then I will be sorry. But we'll see on how yours is I guess. also please tell us how your sideskirts come out. I've heard that the surface is hard to paint or something. thanks again.

Guys, sorry about the delay in faxing the directions to those that have asked. I will fax the ones I have tomorrow AM. If someone can scan them and post them here for the benefit of the others, that would be who I would prefer to fax them to. I would post the directions here, but I'm a technological moron. :o
rwoth or Sophocles, please post here if you would be able to scan and post them once I fax them to you.
[edit] I have 4 pages with very clear instructions with drawings for the front. The sides are just plastic 6 or 7 pop-off pins on the bottom, and 1 on the front fender, then just snap on/off the whole sideskirt. I have no directions for the back, but it is very easy to figure out.

THANKS!!!
Thanks - you are the man! These will really help in deciding what additional hardware I need to pick up.
| Stallion | 09-27-2001 01:00 PM |
I'll do a write up sunday on how I did on the install. Those seem like the OEM kit instructions and I believe ours is a bit different, ie more drilling required on the kit pieces. I went to ace hardware today and bought trim clips. Its the best place to go cause you can get as many as you need in any size out of their hardware section (in the grey plastic boxes) and they're only about $.20 each compared to the auto store which was $2.49 for 3 (RIPOFF!!) and a shotty selection. I picked up the kit from the paint shop today and it looks great. The side skirts are smooth and the color is a perfect match. I have the side skirts on already and cant wait to put the rest on. Just the side skirts make so much of a difference already! I cant believe I got it all done for 200 bucks, it will be hard to find that good of a deal somewhere else. Good luck. I'll let you know how the install goes.

By the way, how much did the whole kit cost?
| rwroth | 09-28-2001 03:29 PM |
Kit price
Kit was $325 shipped... I'm estimating $200 painting (including side skirts) so it's a very good deal compared to the Subaru kit.

Is anyone thinking of painting this kit themself?
~$50 for paint/clearcoat/shipping from paintscratch.com, it should be fairly easy to paint these pieces before attaching them to the car, or am I missing something?

Yea, I definately painted the center sections, I think it looks soo much better with this done. And I will get pics up but I will have to scan them and then upload them to the online photo place since I dont have a digital cam. That will have to be my next investment, when I am done with my WRX stuff of course:)
Stevegood
I thought about that, but I am not sure if there is the elastic additive in their paint to allow the pieces to flex slightly without the paint cracking. Plus, you would need much more than one can to do the whole kit and I wanted it to be professional quality. I figured I cut the corners on getting the cheaper kit, I could splurge on a decent paint job so it would match the resilliance of the factory paint. I was also told there is some slight sanding involved even though they are "ready to paint", just to rough up the surface a bit to accept the paint. I wanted it done right since it will be on the car for as long as I own it.

you might have to search kinda hard, but I know there are WRBP pics floating around somewhere with the centers painted as well as a silver with the same thing done. If you do some searches for "wrx body kit" or "Subaru WRX oem body kit" you should find a few with the centers painted. That is if you cant wait a couple days. :D

Well, I tried to install this kit today, and I have some bad news. I need to talk to Paul about the rear section of the kit. The side pieces fit OK but the center rear section was like 2" too short. It wouldnt even reach to meet the side sections. I am sorta pissed, cause the whole kit is painted, and now I dont know what I am going to do. The front fit beautifuly and the install went well. I did have to drill quite a bit, because each of the brackets holes were too small to accept my trim clips, especially when compared to the factory holes already in the car (you can see these by looking under your front bumper and on the inside of the rear fender). Anyway, so now my car looks good from the front and sides, but from the back it looks like someone stole the center section off my car. Also, the rear center section seemed bowed as I was trying to fit it on the car. The only tips I have are these.
1.Get the rubber strips painted that come with the front pieces. They are used to guard the factory paint from the pieces rubbing against them. Mine are grey right now until I get the hood scoop painted and I will have those done as well.
2. For the front, put the 2 side pieces on, and *then* the center piece. You cant reach the one hole for the side pieces if the center piece is attached. Bolt the center piece on with approx 5/16" x 1" bolts, and use washers, to keep the front piece sturdy. Most of the rest you can use the trim clips.
3. Drill the holes in your stock bumpers with care. Realize that the pieces will stretch further once they are in the holes, dont just hold the piece up and drill.
4. The stock trim clips will not work with the new pieces (because of their length, make sure you have an assortment on hand.
Here is the order of how I did things.
-Remove single clip from both inside front fenders and right underneath factory skirt by the wheel well
-Match up side pieces and mark drill holes in the front bumper and aftermarket piece where it meets in the wheel well.
-Attach pieces by inserting clips and finally screwing the nut onto the stud from behind the front bumper
-Bolt up the front center section
-Match rear sections and mark holes for drilling.
(this is where I dont really know how to continue because it was very evident the center section was not going to fit)
-Drill holes in rear bumper and also in two rear side skirts where the meet with holes in the wheel wells.
-I would say you need to affix the center rear section first, because (if it actually fits), two of the tabs should be underneath the two rear side skirts
-Affix the rear side skirts
-Enjoy your kit
Hope this helps, I will let you guys know what paul says about the rear center section not fitting.

Not 100% sure. I know though, that the OEM front lip from the WRX will fit a 2000 RS, per Accuit, he has one on his sedan. I don't know if the rear spats do. So anyway, if the OEM lip fits the GC8s and the replica is supposed to fit like OEM, I don't see why it wouldn't fit :D

Make sure you study the above picture of the rear of the car. Mount the pieces as you can see they are placed above, which is just under the crease in the rear bumper. If you go higher, the center section will not reach to the side pieces and you willl have the same fitment problems I did. I still did not get the tabs to match up, but it still looks fine, only about 3/16" space between the pieces on both sides.
Rwroth
I used bolts to connect all of the rear pieces except where they attached in the wheel wells. The rest is all nuts and bolts. For the front, the center cetion is atached with nuts and bolts and the side sections are all clips. Hope this helps.

Hi All,
This is Paul, back from Africa. Glad you got the rear section oriented and fit on. Please send me pix. I have nearly sold out of these fiberglass kits, but have many more on the way. I also have a new 1-piece front and rear lip style which is a little different.
I also now have several new choices for rear wings for the 2002 WRX (an elegant "wings-west" style and a V5 looking wing with a low-mount clear or red LED brakelight). I still have some 22B adjustable wings too.
I have fiberglass side-skirts in STi and "fighter" versions as well. Please see the purple car picture under Vendor Classifieds (search on Primitive) for the elegant wing, side skirts and 1-piece rear skirt photo.

Does anyone know where to access them now or have a copy saved that they can repost? I'd appreciate it!
Jon.

I've taken the liberty of putting these up on my webspace for people to freely download. I hope there are no objections.
