Damn, they are all so far away. :(
TyrannoSullyRex 07-28-2005 03:37 PM

I guess Mazda just gave Daddio a car and got rid of the nationwide competition thing.
RallyFord 07-28-2005 03:38 PM

Damn you Longhorns.... getting 2 of these events in your state...

Ours are as close together as all three of the ones in the northeast. What I'm trying to say is, mine's bigger.

Umm.. incorrect.

Boston to Englishtown is 257 miles... then Englishtown to DC is another 175.

Grand Prairie to Houston is 251 miles.

They only LOOK bigger in TX!

I was talking as the bird flies. We don't have to go through 35 different highways to get somewhere.

KC: What happened to cause the Rev It Up hiatus?
MattDell 07-28-2005 09:22 PM

I signed up for the DC event, but I may/may not make it.

What I heard is that there's no new car to introduce this year in time to do a full season with a championship. The MX5 is hitting pretty late so that's one reason.

The other is... imagine a crapload of novices in RWD?
leecea 07-29-2005 12:06 AM

Englishtown for my wife and me.

RWD and manual transmissions! They would have to put up cement bunkers surronding the track!

Signed up for the Dallas Satruday run, might sign up for Houston as well.
Craig W 07-29-2005 02:36 PM

Crap! Here in the Bay Area, Same weekend as the Monterey Historics

I love these events. I hope I can get another free year to Autoweek magazine again.

Scoob5555 07-30-2005 08:56 PM

Etown bright and early Sunday! RWD - but I'll bet they only have the 6-speed auto. At least they have paddles to shift manually.
MattDell 08-01-2005 01:24 AM

So, wait, what's the difference between this and Rev It Up?
So, wait, what's the difference between this and Rev It Up?

-Matt
1) It's not a school
2) You can't win a trip to Laguna Seca
3) You're not competing to win a new car

There are multiple competition courses whereas RevItUp was billed as a 'school'. If anything, this looks to be a more fun event with 3-4 different competition courses where RevItUp had only 1. :D

It's just a ride and drive event where the fastest people every hour can win 'a prize'. Those prizes have yet to be listed on the site... if they ever will. It's not a major competition like RevItUp was.

stxwrxracer 08-01-2005 03:35 PM

Orlando--Oct.8th--2pm, like Scott said...might even make Miami if the prizes are worthy...lol.

Mike King

P.S. RevItUp coming back eh? Still with Mazda, KC? Remember everyone, RevItUp is not solely for Mazda and not owned by Mazda. I say Subaru needs to jump in and do a Subaru RevItUp with the '06 WRX!
boundy3 08-01-2005 08:35 PM

I signed up for it but still not real sure about what is going on.

Is it basically like Rev-It-Up?

Are there 4 different courses where you get to drive a MX-5 in two of them, a RX-8 in one, and another Mazda in a different course?

It's free, right?

Also, does anyone know how many laps you get, and if you get to do all of the courses?

Thanks

Mazda Zoom-Zoom Live Tour
Monday August 1, 8:45 pm ET
New Mazda MX-5 Consumer Introduction to Become Playground for Adults

TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Jackson-Dawson Communications, a specialty automotive marketing and training organization with offices in Los Angeles, Calif.; Irvine, Calif.; Dearborn, Mich., Greenville, S. C.; and New York, has just been awarded a series of consumer ride-and-drive events that will serve as the first public showing of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the all-new version of the best-selling sports car in the world. The 10-city tour will travel under the theme "Zoom-Zoom Live," and promises to bring to life the many facets of the Mazda brand for consumers.

"As the successor vehicle to a Mazda icon, the new MX-5 Miata is extremely important to us," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations, Irvine, Calif. "Because of the special place that the new Miata will occupy in our product line, we have made certain that its product launch to consumers will be innovative and impactful, and the series of 'Zoom-Zoom Live' events we have planned certainly fill that bill."

Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" advertising and marketing campaign has struck a strong chord with the consumer public. Through the use of interactive displays, Jackson-Dawson will bring the theme to life in an interesting, engaging manner that will capture the essence of the MX-5 Miata and the Mazda brand.

From its inception, the Miata has established itself as a car that involves the driver, effectively blending man and machine. This communicative driving characteristic was the guiding principal as designers and engineers set out to develop the all-new MX-5 Miata.

The "Zoom-Zoom Live" consumer events will include ride-and-drive activities with a competitive twist that will emphasize the true sports car prowess of the much-anticipated MX-5, showcasing the technology, performance and design elements that have elevated the all-new MX-5 Miata to the next level. Participants will also get an opportunity to interact with a wide variety of MX-5 properties and displays that will bring a unique perspective to the design and engineering process. Finally, the tours four professionally designed drive courses will offer the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the legendary Miata as well as a number of other Mazda products, including the all new MAZDA5, the RX-8 and many more.

"We are gratified to get the opportunity to help bring such a special vehicle to market," said Sam Dawson, Jackson-Dawson Communications President. "We always seek creative ways to offer consumers a unique experience that is completely in keeping with the brand and model being featured, and we're pleased that Mazda North American Operations found our proposal to be spot-on."

In addition to the series of consumer events, Jackson-Dawson Communications will also conduct a series of training events for Mazda retailer personnel using the same infrastructure. The result is a cost-effective series of events that will exemplify the Mazda brand and its unique heritage. Wait... that means nearly anyone who's competitive autocross at the national level won't be at ZoomZoom... maybe I've got a chance of actually winning something! :- D Thanks for the info.

Nothing wrong with a realistic assessment of your own skill level.
PKer 08-04-2005 04:48 PM

My wife and I are set for Aug 28th LA. I suck at driving Miatas...consistently 4 seconds slower around the same course as in my WRX, but I still think it handles better out of the box.
I'm looking forward to the RX-8 though I've driven one a little on the street and was really impressed, I can't wait to try it at 10/10ths.
flyboymike 09-13-2005 10:20 AM

Finally did the event
I went last Saturday to the Boston event. Didn't do that great. My best autocross time was 40.2 seconds where the "goal time" was 38 seconds. I had one good run on "jinbai ittai," keeping all the balls in with 48 seconds on a 45 second goal course. The time-match gymkhana was a nice sort of test drive. The Mazda5 really suffered compared to driving a couple of sports cars, but I got within half a second of the goal time in the Mazda6.

The most fun part was the driving school, for three reasons:
a) Awesome course with great flow and the nice, friendly apex and turn-in reference cones
b) Instructor complimented me on my driving
c) The RX-8

There's a certain sharpness to the RX-8. While driving my WRX hard, it seems to say, "If you screw up, I'll forgive you." The RX-8 seemed to say, "If you screw up, you'll have plenty of control to fix it yourself." I loved the flat torque curve with the RX-8. No turbo lag out of the corners was an awesome change. The steering feel was excellent and confidence-inspiring. It is sprung a hair soft, perhaps, but it feels very well sorted.

It makes me want to see what I can do within the STX rules to get my WRX to feel like that. I know I'm fighting a lot of physical differences with suspension geometry, the nature of the two motors, weight distribution, and the polar moment of inertia, but surely I could halve the gap between the two.
flyboymike 09-16-2005 11:43 AM

Hmm, checking my score online, it appears I got a 39.86, so I did beat my goal of 40 seconds. Sweet! Smooth really is fast.
